2.2 THE MIDDLEEUROPEAN PROVINCE

The eastern part of Croatia is situated within this province and it belongs to the panonian sector of middleeuropean province.

The panonian sector of middleeuropean province is characterised by temperate continental climate which is characterised by relatively large differences between the average summer and average winter temperatures as well as relatively small amount of precipitation during the year.

The lowland vegetation belt of the panonian sector is characterised primarily by the total extermination of climazonal vegetation and its transformation into rich agricultural superficies. Therefore, the question whether this climazonal vegetation had more forest or steppe character has not been answered so far. If we nevertheless assume, according to the results of some phytocoenological researches, that this vegetation had, at least to some extent, a forest character it probably consisted or termophyllous oak-forests of the Quercetelia Pubescentis order.

On the sites which are not suitable for the cultivation there are some significant vegetation units which , from the phytocoenological point of view belong to various classes. So, for example, Phragmitetea class includes the vegetation of the first real bogs, Corynephoretea the vegetation of podravian sands, while the grassland vegetation belongs to various communities of Festuco- Brometea class. As far as the wet, mesophyllous swards are concerned, one can say that they, as in the rest of Middle Europe, mostly belong to various communities of the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea order.
