1.1 THE ADRIATIC PROVINCE

To this province belong the areas of littoral karst of Croatia. As far as the geological base is concerned this area is mostly built of limestone. All calcareous areas have explicit karst characteristics.

From the climatic aspect it is significant that this area is under stronger or weaker influence of mediterranean climate and is therefore characterised by mild and relatively short but rainy winters and dry, hot summers. Nonetheless, regarding the climate there are significant differences between the parts of the province that are in the coastal area and those who are away from the sea either in horizontal of vertical direction. These differences are best seen in the vegetative structure of the green mantel and therefore, within this province we can differentiate between two major vegetation zones.

The first one is the zone of evergreen vegetation of euromediterranean littoral and the other is the zone of deciduous vegetation of submediterranean and mediterranean-montane littoral.
